The Apology



Shukura’s last day of school was much like her first. She always was a girl of few words—either in English or in Arabic. As far as she was concerned, her smile served as an adequate substitute for speech. Those plump curved lips contained all that was essential in her personality. And so, on her final day in the country, it was no surprise to see her sitting quietly through her English lesson, a review of prepositions that would probably be of limited use at her grandparent’s home in Cairo.
